One of my pair of female gerbils died on Saturday. She had a respiratory infection and despite antibiotics and rehydration she died very quickly. I am now left with one eighteen-month old gerbil, Viola, by herself, and I think that this will be the last. The reason being that I am leaving for university in September and can't take any beasties with me. My family are happy to care for her when I go, but no extra gerbils.
However since she may live to be three or four I don't want her to be lonely in the meantime. Although we are ginving her lots of love and attention, it's not the same as her having a cagemate. Is it possible to intoduce a gerbil of a similar age to her so they can live together? A younger one would be easy to introduce, but she would live longer than Viola and be lonely when Viola died... you see?
Any advice would be very helpful.
