Another note regarding my previous
how-to.
Turn the lights down and keep in a quiet private
place before letting
them goto work.
A few interesting observations. With regard to
their 9" Aspen
tube underground terraforma ;-)
Compulsive digging has stopped, even when clear
glass is glaringly
exposed under their burrows.
Gerbils seem at peace if not, very cozy. There is
one chamber where
they seem to rest exclusively.
When at rest, they stretch out their front and
back paws, tummy and
head on the
ground.
Ears seam to lay back. Less alert when under
ground.
Lots of grooming.
Female will sometimes wander about pushing parts
of the structure with her
nose obviously trying to keep the burrows tidy.
Other than that, male does
most of the digging, and destroying.
;-)
When emerging from underneath, they do a quick
lookout on their hind legs,
if I make a movement, they DASH back
underneath. Interesting. Just 1 day
and they forgot I'm a friend. ;-)
I'm planning to try this experiment again, except
I will not use tubes
and will arrange about 9 ladders into a grid skeleton.
(Ladder steps must be wide enough for them to
tunnel and fit their
bodies into of
course.) I think the results should be even more realistic.
