You're right about the rawhide- I would definitely not give that to them.
There are many other, safer alternatives for gnawing- wood, dog biscuits,
thick cardboard (like the kind from inside a roll of carpet- very hard!) I
have heard several vets discourage even giving rawhide to dogs.
