Don't worry, it's a typical newbie question spree. We all did it at one point
;-)

Does he have a friend in with him? If not, it could just be boredom and nothing
to do. I'd recommend getting him a male gerbil to be with. If he's already got
a mate, you may want to take him out for an hour or so each day and make sure
he always has lots of safe, fun toys to play around in.

> And how much do your gerbils sleep in a day?

They sleep most of the day unless it's feeding time or there's something
interesting to watch. For the most part, they're noctoural and are most active
at night.

Don't raise your hand until he's used to you. Put a few seeds on your hand, lay
it flat on the bedding, and stay still so as not to frighten him with sudden
movements. When he'll sit on your hand and eat, you can try raising your hand
slightly. If he jumps off, wait a few days and try again. If he seems okay,
raise it a bit more each time you do it and eventually he'll jump right on,
even without treats.
