I have found the same thing to be true with my REW pups. I also have
several adults and they are not nearly as nice - in fact, my two head
bashers (they just jump up and bash their head on the mesh ) are
REWs. I also have one that was somewhat tame as a youngster (from a
pet store) and now is NOT a nice gerbil. I believe that if someone
tried to make her snake food, she would kill the snake. I have tried
split caging her with about 7 different gerbies and she makes them
cower in the corner (both males and females) WITH the divider. I
finally put her in a cage with tons of bedding, 3 wood toys, a huge
Lixit water bottle and leave her be. For a while I tried to "tame"
her and she would fake me out by crawling into my hand voluntarily
and act really nice for about 20-30 seconds and then chomp down very
hard! After 5 nasty bites I gave up. I am convinced she must have
been a lab gerbil prior to her being shipped to the pet store or
something. <G>. I give her lots of tp rolls and she has tons of
bedding plus her 3 wooden "toys" and as far as I can tell is as happy
as can be. She is a lot of fun to watch as she will sit on her hind
legs and weave (like they do) for a considerable amount of time, then
thump, then run around. like crazy and boy can she dig.... am sure
that in gerbil terms she is psychotic and would benefit from some
lithium or Prozac (or both). But she is very healthy and like I said,
very entertaining, so....
