What can they chew through

I am in the process of setting up to get my gerbils.
I am starting with one aquarium and would like to expand with tubes.  I don't
want to spend a fortune on habitrail so I am looking at making my own.  

I found Poland spring water bottles are perfect.  Are they something that
gerbils can chew through?
