Todd,
From my experience in gerbil housing, burrowing into a aquarium
filled with dirt, clay , or anything else is dangerous. You cannot observe
the gerbils ALL the time and will only know if one dies by a smell later.I
have a working model in development that gives them that kind of feel but
gives you the owner access to there hidding places with little disturbance.
Right now it takes time and some money to build one of these. Hopefully in a
couple of months I will have them out. Until then you have to play it safe
and not get too fancy to fast. The gerbils are the main concern here.
