My gerbils have done this. I have both a bowl raised above the litter and a
jar that I use for a litter box. Although they don't always use it, the
bottle and bowl do help to keep the mess down if you empty them every day or
two. It also saves cleaning the cage as often.

I read somewhere if you place a jar on its side with
sand in it, the gerbils will roll in the sand and
afterwards use it as a 'litterbox'.
Has anyone done this? Is it similar to 'litter box
training' but w/o the training since the gerbils seem
to already know what to do? *g*
I thought it was an interesting thing and would
appreciate any comments on it. :)
