My female will do this as well. She will puff up and appear fluffy, or
bigger. Has nothing to do with pregnancy either because she is alone.
The only connection I can make is temperature. It seems she will do this
mainly when it is a little cooler. Which kind of make sense, if you
think about goosebumps in humans, the bumps raise the hair to trap in
heat, maybe gerbils have a similar method. This is no where near a 100%
accurate answer, just my observation and hypothesis.
