Hi Emily
Yes their is a lot of conflicting advice, I have been
wondering if what someone told me was true, and that
was to write to the Embasy of Chile and ask them,
according to this person he asked for info on
somehting and they sent him loads of stuff. anyway in
anaswer to your questions.
1 i dob't handle mine everyday, cause I have loads of
other animals and don't get time to cuddle everyone,
but they are a small group of degus in a large cage,
so they have plenty of company, if you have two they
might require more attention form you, but I'm sure
they are not going to worry too much if you miss one
day here and their(as long as of course you feed and
water then daily). you don't have to get them out to
giv ethem attention, you can offer pieces of greens or
other things to take off you and do.
2 Mine are not overly fussed on alfalfa, alfalfa is a
large clover, hay is dried grass, i would and do give
hay daily, they chew it up and play in it too, as well
as eat it.
3 I have found out one of my 'females' is actually a
male, so I have two males in my group and they get on
fine, mind you the older male is the boss, but it is
the older female that is boss over the lot, in the
food first, first to have any treats, I have sold in
the past two males together and two females together,
I know where both have gone and have had updates on
occasions, and neither have said they have had
problems with either sex, I think the problem might
arrise if you tried to mix adults that have never
seen each other before.>
4 I biggest you can get, they do like climbing and
are not too happy about you approaching them form
above, plastic bottoms will be gnawed though in
minutes if they decided to, so if you can put a false
bottom in, made of thick wiremesh and then fill the
gap with either wood cat litter or shavings, I have
mine in a large small gapped ferret cage, like a
minimum of two foot, by 18 inches, by 30 inches high
three story, but you can get a smaller one, they would
suit two, it has a metal base, also they do have a
habit of missing the cage floor and peeing outside the
cage, so watch furniture and walls!! you can give them
cardboard to chew up to line the wire floors, you do
have to replace it often, but cardboard from boxes is
quite thick and lasts most times a week with mine,
mind you i do give them cardboard tunnels and loo roll
middles to chew instead. hope this is of some help.
