Gerbils will urinate on things to mark them as their territory. They very
frequently do this with their food bowl, which is why it is important each
tank gets their own bowl back after feeding time if you have multiple
tanks.

Subject: Our new breeding pair and a question about pee pee
Date: Monday, May 28, 2001 5:01 PM

Okay, update from Gerbie's place.... the wilderness gerbil girl... (ha ha
ha)

We got our breeding pair from Idaho. I was at work when they came & my
husband said they poor little guys were real hot (actually sweating) when
he
opened the box. That concerned me, but they seem fine now. (that was last
week they arrived). We got a Siamese girl I named Pandora and a little
Chinchilla (grey agouti?) boy (I named "Blade"). They are still a little
skittish, but we plan on working with them very slowly so as not to freak
them out. Pandora looks like she could be Gerbie's sister, except for
Gerbie
is like a shade darker.

A question my husband had was that the other day we put them in our
"playpen" to let them run as Pandora seems to have a lot of extra energy
and
they appeared to be having fun running around and Pandora was "teasing"
Blade and making him chase her all over the place. Pandora is very curious
and my husband had just his hand in the playpen laying there "flat" and she
kept running over to his hand, sniffing him and then she pee peed on his
hand!!!! What's that about? Does anybody know? He thought that she didn't
like him and I thought maybe she was "marking" him... but I don't really
know. We haven't had gerbils that long or even enough of them to see that
happen. Also, when I put my hand in the playpen, she began coming over to
my
hand and also pee peed in my hand!!!!!! Anyway, we are just curious as to
what she thought she was doing.

Thanks to you all for your help.
