Look on the back and see what the percentages of
protein and fat are. I feed lab block to mine, I buy
it by the pound at a local feed store and its .75 a
pound and it sounds like what you are describing. I
know that Kaytee has a bagged product that they sale
that looks just like my lab block, but it says
Hamster/gerbils on it. Being semi-carnivorous, I would
think that RAT block would have a higher protein level
than gerbil feed, and less of a seed base. Just a
thought.

My gerbils are FAT on lab block, I mean GODZILLA fat.
Truely, even though it is low in fat (5%), it is
higher in protein (20%). I had this question on the
board not too long ago and they told me to take them
off the block, OR feed them every other day. Since I
had so much of it, and they LOVE it, I started feeding
less, once a day instead of twice, except for the
nursing moms. Everyone is still healthy and happy, if
not as roly-poly!

There is no waste with this as it stays hard right
down to the last nibble. I do think it may be too hard
for the pups to eat, although I have seen a pup with
all its legs wrapped around a block, nibbling away! It
was pretty comical and made me wish for one of Donna's
great digital cameras!

Namaste!
