I think the answer to this question is "it depends". Removing dad with
his male pups and leaving mom with an older daughter has worked very
smoothly for me. None of my gerbils have seemed worse for the wear.
If you just took out the female or male and placed them alone or in a
split cage, I think that would be stressful for them.
Also age is a factor. Young gerbils (say under 8 months) seem very
adaptable to new partnering and relationships. I try to get them into a
long-term relationship when they are older, so say a two-year old gerbil
I wouldn't try to reclan (except into a breeding situation. -- Gerbils
regardless of age seem to bond easily and well with an opposite sexed
gerbil -- but this isn't what you're asking here!)
If I have older females, especially, that are clanned, I leave them
as-is.
