I'm not sure about the guinea pigs, but gerbils aren't afraid of cats!

You betcha! Alex mostly does not deign to notice the gerbies. If one is
placed close to him, Alex looks miffed and leaves.

Rascal is very interested in the gerbies. Once he knocked Pippin out of
my hands (stupid of me to be holding the gerb with Rascal nearby, I
know), so I generally keep Rascal in another room when I have gerbies
out. When Rascal follows me into the gerbil room, he sits and watches
them with great fascination, but he doesn't try to get into their
cages.

I think Deb's recommendations were great. Gradual introduction, and
teach the kitty that the rodents are not on the menu. ;-)
