I use a dustpan to scoop everything out, then spray it down with a non-toxic
cleaner and wipe it out.  Three more sprayings and wipings with water to get
out the cleanser, and I'm done.  Of course the gerbils are elsewhere in a
carrier while I do this.  :)

One tip:  If you move your gerbils elsewhere to clean their home, put some of
the old bedding in with them to make it smell more like home.  Then when their
home is clean with fresh bedding sprinkle some of the old bedding on top.
This helps prevent triggering a fight over "new" territory.
