>> 10 gallons is sufficient space for a pair of
gerbils, and you can increase the square footage
(square inches?) by adding in wire shelving, hanging a
wheel (with slats covered by masking tape) or just
putting in sturdy boxes. If you did want to go to a
larger space, I'm sure they wouldn't mind that!

The petshop I got them from didn't have any wheels,
but I'm glad, because now I'll get a hanging wheel.
What's taking so much space is a nice little piece of
wood I found and cleaned up. It's hollowed out and
doesn't have a bottom, and there's three openings (two
on one end), and little 'windows' along the sides, and
the top juts up but it pretty flat. My gerbils have
fun running around and under it, but it takes almost a
third of the floorspace, and just over half as tall as
the tank.
Also, when the gerbils try and dig down through the
bedding, it saddens me. What I'm wanting to do, is get
a 20 gal. US tank and fill it with sand, and make a
large cage to attach to the top (but be detachable to
make it easier to transport, and cleaning). The cage
is one reason I joined this group.
Something I forgot to say during my introduction, is
that I want to get a job (don't know how with 15,000+
lost jobs in Georgia) and eventually become a gerbil
breeder (when I know enough). My dad used to be a
gerbil breeder when he was around my age too!
