I find the mineral blocks are merely an expensive
chew toy that lasts about a minute.

If you are feeding a good balanced diet, you don't
need to use either mineral blocks or drops in the water.

They like burying their food.  I skip the food bowl for
them, and just put it on the bedding in the middle of
the tank.  They dig for lunch and are happy about it.

That is the nature of gerbils.  You won't be able to
get them to stop.  The only way to not have to clean
out the bowl is to stop using a bowl.

If you clean the cage weekly, then there won't be any
problems with putting the food right on the bedding...
just don't put it in the toilet corner.
