Well, I haven't had many gerbils, so I don't have a plethora of names
to explain. But I like to try to pick something that's a tad unique,
and fits their character.
So I have Einstein.... no, he's not terribly brilliant, but he is a
Dove, and once in your hand, he just has this laid back kind of
personality. It just popped in my head to name him that.
Then we got Trinity... my husband and I have a deal that he gets to
name the girls, and I get to name the boys. I believe he picked the
name after the character in Matrix. It honestly seems to fit her.
She's a normal agouti, but is a bit more trusting than Einstein. Much
easier to pick up, and doesn't get so paranoid when you move things
in her cage. :)
Eclipse, Trinity's little boy, was a beautiful black. (After more
research, I realize now that he wasn't a Slate, but he's STILL as
pretty!) I thought it fit him... and he had those little snips of
white under his chin and on his paws, just like before a full
eclipse. And it sounded cool. :)
And last but not least, there's Quark. Why Quark? Well, he's a
argente golden, and I can't explain it, but he just looks like one! I
believe the term quark is a measurement of... something, but I can't
recall what. I also know it's the name of a character in Deep Space 9
- about the only character I liked too. :P
So I guess my system is - I pick a name that seems to fit, and is
slightly original in some way. I'm not dissing other people's methods
of naming, I just like having gerbils named something besides Fluffy,
or Gerbie - just as I would never name my dog Spot or Rex or Fido. :)
Oh, and my clan name? Copper Dragon is a character I play in an
online RP room. And it's also the name of a classy bar I'd like to
open up one day - a far fetched dream, but it's nice to have them!

I was going to send this email BEFORE the whole mess with the Neosporin
occurred, but anyway, here's a kind of fun question I was thinking about
earlier (which might have been asked before, but indulge me ^_^)...
How do you pick the names for your gerbils? Is it just something random, or
do you name them after favorite characters from books, TV, movies...? I know
some people name them by a theme: some name their gerbils after
constellations, others from mythical characters...
I was just wondering, because I was looking around at different clan webpages
last night, and I just thought it was neat how some people came up with
really creative names! I've seen just about everything from 'Fluffy' to
names that were taken from organic chemistry!
When I first thought about naming my clan, I was going to go with 'The
Thespian Clan', but I realized that that would limit me too much because I'd
basically have to name all the gerbils after actors and actresses! So I came
up with 'The Eisen Clan' instead, which lets me choose whatever names I want.
;) I basically just pick out whatever names I think sound neat. I chose
Hamlet and Ophelia because I wanted a Shakespearian romantic couple, but
Romeo and Juliet was too common...granted, the names I DID pick don't exactly
bring up happy images, but I still like them! ;) And their babies thus far
are Harry, Hermione, Percy, and the Wish-Answered Triplets (they were three
identical pups, so I just gave them a group name, hehe).
But I just figured I'd throw the question out, in case anyone was bored and
felt like sharing their stories! ;)
