Removing the water bottle is not something that I
personally would try.  I'd be concerned that even if
my gerbils could survive that they would be thirsty.
When the water bottle runs dry and they go without
water even for 12 hours they take a good, long drink
when I replace the bottle.

Also, with the water bottle I basically give them only
seed-mix so the tank stays very clean as there is
nothing in there that can rot.
