I presume you are talking about Petsmart or Pets at Home. PaH have
bought our Petsmart and have slightly better ideas of animal welfare,
but both buy stock from mass breeders. Our experience is that gerbils
bought from their stores tend to be smaller than average and have
shorter life expectancy. I know it is tempting to buy weak looking
gerbils from them, we have done so ourselves, but we have found that it
is fruitless.
