When you are buying a Gerbil cage what are the
important facts that you consider ? e.g. Price range,
materials and other accessories.
**Visibility,Ability to withstand chewing,Inexpensive.
Are there any bad or weak points you have noticed
about any cages that you have bought recently that
need to be improved and altered?
**I like the SAM and Old Habitrail setups but they
were hard to keep clean. The gerbils would urinate in
the tunnels and look out towers causing the room to
smell. To avoid this, the attachments should be larger
to accomodate litter. Also, tunnels should be vertical
and diagonal instead of straight.
Do you have any general advice for me about my
project?
**If making a natural setup type enclosure, make the
enclosures deep to accomodate tunnels/burrows dug by
the gerbils.
Do you personally have any advice for me on the
natural environment of and handling in captivity of
rodents? or know any good web sites where I can find
out any useful information about their habitats?
**The National Gerbil Society has references to
scientific literature which may be helpful.
Do you have any advice about the material or
manufacture of the cage?
**A non allergenic substrate would be nice for
burrowing. Maybe a corncob/coconut litter would work.
What would you be willing to pay for a good habitat
cage?
Do you think there is a need or a market potential for
a habitat cage that suites the need of the Gerbil as
well as the owners?
**Yes everything is for hamsters and not made strong
enough to withstand chewing by gerbils.
Are any of you in search of a free cage for gerbils
and live in the UK?
** Im in USA. I find my tanks on trash day . Or I buy
from Garage sales.
