Gerbils can hold off their pregnancies after mating. For example, gestation is five weeks, however, it generally takes six weeks before a litter is  kicked out of the nest. Therefore, even though the mom and dad mated right after delivery, she will not implant the embryos until later, maybe one or two weeks.  Also, gerbils will not show pregnancy until a few days before delivery.

Today, one of my females had a litter of three. Just yesterday I noticed a very slight rounding of the abdomen. I had thought she would be another week or two before downloading, a military term ;), her litter.
