Baby gerbils are no longer nursing by five weeks of age. They can be removed
safely then, however, six weeks is much preferred. That extra week with
their parents allows them to get a solid education on proper gerbil behavior
such as grooming, eating, nest building and social etiquette.
If a litter must be removed before six weeks of age, keep all the litter
mates together. They really need that social bonding.
