24-28 days gestation is usual if the female isn't
already nursing a litter.  You often don't get any
or very much warning...she might not even show
or show enough that you notice, until you find pups
in the nest.

Elaborate nest building with lots of energy being
put into it  in the day or so before is about the only
tipoff you might get.

As for when they start doing the deed, that may
take awhile. Inexperienced animals sometimes
take several months to figure it out.  If an experienced
gerbil is paired with an inexperienced one, they start
at it a lot sooner.  They could produce the first litter
around four months, or wait until they're over eight,
possibly pushing a year.
