Depends on how nervous the parents are, and how much they trust you.  I usually handle 
them from day 1, but I've had parents that didn't mind.  If they felt I was messing 
with their little ones too much, they just came up and shoved at me with their noses & 
front paws, and I respectfully withdrew my hand and didn't bother them anymore that 
day.  They seemed satisfied with that.  I am much more cautious with first-time 
parents, though, restricting myself to just moving litter aside once every day or two 
to count noses, for the first couple of weeks.
