If the pair are 'inexperienced' it could be what you seen for mounting behavior was dominance related and wasn't actual mating. Since they did it right at the beginning, I bet that is what it was. And it could take them months to get the idea. So, time will tell if you indeed were lied to by the pet store that sold you what they had (or were too lazy to look for a male)....
