As far as clanning gerbils --
Never have more than one breeding female in a clan --
it is a recipe for diaster.

- You can keep two females together.
- I've had good luck with female trios (given you have
a gerbil-gentle line and the females are sisters or
mother-daughters)
- You can keep a breeding pair together
- You can keep a male clan of 2, 3, 4, 5 together if
introduced all at once as pups (I've not gone higher
than 5)

When one of your gerbils dies if it is a friendly male
he may accept a male pup pair. Females are harder to
re-clan unless you put her in with a male, but then
you might get a litter or few even if she's old.

Well that's my experience of two years of gerbil
keeping
