>How should their cage be set up?

A Water Bottle is essential. Food bowl. Wheel is great
for exercise. Nesting material such as plain white
tissue and or tissue paper rols for them to shred.
Arrange these however you like but be sure the gerbils
have plenty of room to move around.

> what should i use for a
> food dish?

I use very small extra hard ceramic custard bowls. No-
it isn't really ceramic though. I don't know what it
is, might be that cornell stuff or whatever, because
it is extra hard to chip or break. Also you can buy an
extra hard plastic bowl especially made for gerbils
and other rodents from most pet stores.

>who do i get the water bottle in the
> cage?

You can buy a watter bottle holder too. The metal kind
protect the bottle from being chewed.

>and the wheel?

If you have a a wire wheel , Depending on the type of
material the roof is made from you can wire it to the
top of the cage with thin flexible wire. This also
prevents the rare injuries where a gerbil gets a foot
caught between the wheel axle and the wire stand since
the wire stand will be inverted and unlikely to trap
him.

>and they cover up
> the food dish with bedding

Gerbils instinctively do this. I just uncover it once
daily to be sure they remember there are some cool
treats inside. But most gerbils can find their food
bowl again anyway. I just do it for my peace of mind
really. There is no harm in letting them cover it.
Just check it each day to be sure there is plenty
left.
