Hi Catherine, See http://www.geocities.com/abcgerbils/whybest.html for my supposed-to-be-humorous comparison of choices for "cage pets". I think guinea pigs and gerbils are both good choices. A guinea pig is better if you want something to sit in your lap. A gerbil is more engaging to watch and you can handle them though only some will settle down with you -- most are go go go.
