Though I don't have any non-tame gerbils, I find this to be a way to get gerbils more accustom to sitting and crawling on you...
I find resting my hand in the tank for about 15 minutes in the evening works great. I rest it between two boxes so they have to crawl on me to get through that path of the tank. I also wear long sleeves of an old shirt for them to taste, and climb in or onto. And I feed them using the palm of my hand as a food dispensor. If I have great new cardboard, like a toilet tissue roll I hold it for a bit so they associate me with it and run onto and over me in their excitement.
