I think the best material to use is Chinchilla dust/sand, it's relatively cheap and non-toxic. I personally have a smallish bowl of it in their cages and they love to roll and dig in it :)
It also keeps their fur more or less grease free too. (I didn't notice this until I took one of my pairs to a show recently, they both won best in class, the albino especially as she was actually white compared to the others).
