Hi everyone, I wrote the list a week ago about my female gerbil who had a bold spot near the corner of her eye and I was wondering what it was and whether it was serious. I ended up taking Tilda to the vet and she gave me a solution to apply on the bold spot (she said it was slightly infected, but nothing serious nor rare in gerbils) twice a day for a week, which I did. She looks much better now in that the infection seems to be history and all that is left now is the bold spot. It isn't very visible because the nearby hairs cover the spot rather well, but it does look different from the rest of her face, so I was wondering if you could tell me how long it will take for the fur to regrow? It DOES grow back eventually, doesn't it???
I have been planning on taking another two gerbils to make my gerbil family grow from four to six, but since I'm more than likely going to get the two gerbils from different breeders I'm going to have to introduce them with the split cage method. I have one detail that I need to know, however: what exactly should the wall between the halves of the tank be like? I do not have a smaller cage to place inside the tank (14 gallons), so I'm going to have to improvise a wall. Which is the best material to use: glass so that they can see each other but can't sniff each other through it or a grating (or is it a wire rack in English)? If the latter, should the "holes" in the grating be very small so that the gerbils can't hurt each other through it or is the size 1 cm x 1 cm that I currently have available alright? Another question related to the split cage method of introduction is this: what if any would you consider as the maximum age for the two gerbils to be so that the introduction would go as smoothly as possible? I know that the younger the gerbils, the easier it is, but is there a limit after which it gets very tricky? I'm planning on getting male gerbils this time, but that is not 100% sure yet, though. Thank you in advance for your help and any ideas that you might want to share about this, Sari 14 gallon tank
