Mating but no babies STILL!!!!

My male and female gerbils have mated once before and no babies. About two months ago they were mating again and still no babies. I am wondering what is wrong? Also, Malika (polar fox female) was put with a male and they mated the second day together. Her male has passed away 3 days after mating...Malika did not birth a litter. Why won't any of my females birth litters? Will I ever get a litter?
