I don't worry much about wood items because my sweeties chew them up before
they get too bad. but watch the Clorox! 8 oz is what goes in an entire
washer of water and bleaches the heck out of your clothes. You need about a
tablespoonful per gallon. A capful in the water in a toilet bowl is
approved by the Health Department of this city to kill allsorts of things,
including Hepatitis virus. Actually, there are a lot more friendlythings to
use. Try vinegar and water, for example. When something is really gross, I
use rubbing alcohol, which kills most anything and evaporates without
leaving a residue (I think Clorox may leave a residue) Or check at your pet
store for a disinfectant made specifically for pet cages.

Subject: wooden items

Quick question, as it seems we are dealing with allergy prone babies, what
is the best way to clean/sanitize wooden houses/toys? I have been told to
sanitize the cage with clorox. I used 8 oz of clorox to 1 gallon of water
(I think this was right). I was afraid to use this on their wooden house
because it may soak in. Are wooden houses, toys and such just doomed to be
replaced if they get urine on them and have a faint ammonia smell? Should
we try to cut off the affected area or sand it? Also, can I use the Clorox
wipes to sanitize their cage? Or ideally is there a more "friendly" way to
sanitize their tank? I figure if clorox irritates my nose it can't be great
for them either, although the smell is gone when I am done. They live
currently in a 10-gallon aquarium, but if our accomodations improve, they
will get a larger home also. (we are thinking 29 gallons) This can be a
lot of weight to move even when it is empty. And likewise it would be
difficult to haul boiling water aroud the house. Any suggestions on
sanitization?
