Hi,

Thanks to everyone who has been giving advice on my little ones. This support
network has been very helpful. Today Sunshine and Daisy had their first
bedding/litter change, and since they seemed to be getting a little bored
with their home, I remodeled. They now have 4 floors instead of 2 huge ones,
and tons of tubes to run through and things to chew, and the bottom floor
allows for an extra inch and a half of shavings and privacy so they're hard
at work trying to figure out how to build their first tunnels. So far,
they're cheating a little bit, digging under slabs of cardboard and their
wooden den, rather than making a ceiling for the tunnel. They are so happy
it's unbelievable. I had a lot of fun thinking up how they might best enjoy
all that space, too. I'm so glad I invested in such a large cage - they love
to climb.

Since everything was new and I figured they'd be in an exploring mode, I put
in their new water bottle, too. There are now 2 types, just in case.
Unfortunately, I know they haven't been drinking because they would go up to
the old one and nibble on the outside of it, and then immediately turn away
when it made noise. But when I squeezed the bottle, they both ran over each
other trying to drink as much as they could fill their little tummies with at
once. Now that I put the new one in, which does tend to leak on its own,
Sunshine - the more level-headed one - tried it and drank a normal amount,
then went back to her business. Hopefully Daisy will like this one too, and
they will be all set. I was so excited when I saw the bubbles coming up,
showing that she really had gotten water out. I think for some reason they
are afraid of the metal ball in the other type, even though it works fine.
This one is just a glass tube with a bend in it, which is the same kind I
used for the gerbils I had 13 years ago. The water bottles are on 2 different
levels, so we'll see if they use the other one after this.

I like to feed them new things to see how they react, but I am worried about
things that might potentially be poisonous to them. I know that whatever I
feed them shouldn't have any added salt or sugar, but besides that, can
anyone give me some suggestions for what I should and what I definitely
should not try?

So far they love carrots and broccoli, corn flakes, and amazingly are
somewhat indifferent to sunflower and pumpkin seeds. They do not eat green
apple, tangerine, or the corn that comes in the seed mix. I have heard that
they can eat yogurt, although mine refused to taste it, and that they might
like cooked oatmeal. What are your thoughts? And how do I know if they're
overweight?

Thanks,

Dana :)
