To do well in a show a gerbil should have a good colour, as described in
the standards, be a good size without being fat, and have good "type".
Type is the idealised shape for a gerbil - this is described in the
standard.

As Gary says, condition is important. A gerbil should be free from
injury, clean and looking well groomed. Gerbils will do all the grooming
themselves if you help them with chinchilla dust as they like
sand-bathing.

Being greasy or having a visible moult line (which is where the coat is
naturally replacing itself) will count against a gerbil.
