Strangely, gerbils clean their ears with the long claws on the back
feet. It is not at all unusual for gerbils to cause bleeding or other
irritation due to excessive scratching with the back feet. There is
often no reason for this, but it can be due to mites, or other
irritation. I suggest that the gerbil in question be watched carefully.
There may be an abscess or other infection, or parasites as suggested.
If it clears up OK in a few days then it was probably nothing.
