Hi everyone, What might cause gerbils to become less active? My two gerbils (11-months and 8-months) seem to be very healthy boys, but lately they are less and less active. They rarely come out during the day and still stay in their nest until at least 9 pm. Then they'll come out to get fed and chew on toilet rolls, dig, etc. They're not necessarily sleeping all the time, often they're awake but just hiding in bed, unless someone go up to their cage and lure them out. As I'm sleeping myself at night, I can only deduce that sometimes they're active (from the mess in the cage the next day) and sometimes they're not during those hours.
They're very tame gerbils and do get let out to play every two days or so. Then they'll play for an hour to two hours, by the end of which they're both very eager to be picked up and carried for a while and fed. Then they're put back in their cage where they attach their fresh toilet rolls and popsicle sticks enthusiastically. Can their decrease in activity be due to the season? I'm in Alberta Canada, and the temperature so far's been around -10 to +9 degrees Celsius. So it's really not cold at all, we don't even have any snow here. Their cage is in the kitchen where it's always been. Are they bored? Their diet? Not enough activity around them for stimilus?
