It's customary with mailing lists - they normally use
it to verify your identity in the case of lost
passwords.

If topica is like Yahoo - Julian can automatically
subscribe you and unless you want to view archives,
etc, you don't have to enter any information.  With
yahoo as a group moderator you can do this and it
sends the person a password to access the site.  Of
course they will insist you update your user profile
if you do this :)
