My gerbils like to kick their litter all over the place. When it doesn't go outside of the cage, it buries the food dish (and consequently the food) on the bottom of the cage. I've thought about putting it a little higher using one of those food dishes with wires that attach to the side of the cage. I'm not sure if this would prevent the litter from landing in the food bowl.
