Greetings, I've spent a bit of time using Gerbv 2.6.0 over the past week to inspect some CAM files prior to placing an order with OSHpark. Overall, it appears to be a very good package, however I have noted a couple of issues.
One of my board designs includes two internal power planes. Plane layers are represented as negative data in the files generated by P-CAD 2000, a CAD package I've used for many years. Because of the way OSHpark combines board designs to create panels, negative layer data must be inverted as part of their process. I was provided with translated data by OSHpark, and while all other layers appeared to be correct when inspected using Gerbv, the plane layers did not show thermal ties between pads connected to the plane and the plane itself. Some further research showed that the translated plane data from OSHpark appears to be correct when rendered by a different Gerber file viewer found on the 'net. It was also determined that the translated data appears as expected if the "Layer -> Invert color" operation is performed. A couple of other rendering issues related to plane data have been identified: - Plane data render correctly as initially loaded, but not if "Layer -> Invert color" operation is performed. Results are identical to viewing translated file from OSHpark. - The only rendering resolution which works with either color-inverted plane data or translated data from OSHpark is "Fast". As I don't know if it's acceptable to attach files to messages sent to this list, I've placed three files on my website at the link below. One is a PDF which describes the issues presented here and provides images for illustrative purposes. The other two are the originally generated Gerber file for one of my power planes and the translated data from OSHpark. I've searched your archives and not found any previous reports of issues similar to these. My apologies if this is a known issue or the result of an error on my part. As it appears that the translation at OSHpark is being performed correctly, I've determined that it is prudent to complete my order through that outlet. The information in this message and on my website is provided for your benefit so that you may improve the quality of your software.
