It should be easy enough to compile gerbv (and libgerbv) in Linux.

You have to:
1. Install several development packages

2. Get source code (preferable with git, so you changes is up to date with
   source), configure and compile it. For this see "Building gerbv by
   downloading from anonymous git repository"
   from http://gerbv.geda-project.org/

3. After gerbv compilation, it is possible to run it as src/gerbv without
   installation
