I'm not a developer, but I regularly generate binaries for Linux and
Windows for by colleagues fronm git sources. Sometime this require
little patching.
Gerbv developers moved to git (but not github) and seems still on
Sourceforge

I didn't know about X2.
I saw a bug about a file with X2 in the name. Apparently if your file
name ends with "X2", it is treated differently from files that don't
include "X2" in the name. It must be related to this. Maybe related?
https://sourceforge.net/p/gerbv/bugs/246/
Anyway, gerbv hasn't seen a commit in a long time. If the developers
are too busy to continue on it, can we add new developers?

I have some patches for Gerber X2 support:
https://www.ucamco.com/en/gerber/demo-1
Gerber X2 was introduced in the fall of 2013. Gerber X2 supports
attributes but is compatible with X1. Attributes are akin to labels
providing information associated with the image or features in it.
X2 defines a set of attributes to streamline the transfer of
fabrication data from design to fabrication. The most important new
attributes are:
File function: Is the file the top solder mask or the bottom copper
layer, etc.?
File polarity: Is the file positive or negative
Part: Does the file represent a single PCB, an array, a coupon, etc.?
Pad function: Is the flash an SMD pad, a via pad, or a fiducial, etc.?
