JOTM is a good TM, it may be worth talking with ObjectWeb about it.
As for Connection pooling, Gianny Amour and I have briefly discussed implementing this via use of the Jakarta Commons Pool.
Maybe DBCP could be an option. I have been involved in a discussion on adding XA support to DBCP which uses the Commons Pool.
