Back at that time I put a patch into the version of rtmpdump in my ubuntu ppa, and the same patch is in the raspberry pi repository I maintain. I've been running with the patch since that time and can confirm it doesn't make anything worse. But in spite of having fibre broadband I could never get things to fail, so could never confirm whether it actually fixed the problem. On the other hand, those who were complaining stopped doing so, so something must have worked.
