I would just like to add a note of caution: of course the Unix philosophy is to do one thing and do it well. Now of course GIP could hardly be described as 'one thing' but involving things like /usr/bin/nice in the app itself is wrong in my view, particularly since nice is only at the boundary of userspace anyway. The place for nice+GIP is in an alias, as has been suggested, or (my preference as more portable and flexible) an extra script.
