vpid/vPID actually stands for "version" PID;
as you say, it denotes the PID (Programme
IDentifier) for various available programme
versions, all corresponding to the same "mother"
PID, i.e. iPlayer show - the vpid string is used to
retrieve available streams via (various)
"mediaselector/5" URLs.
As such, vPID isn't associated only with video
programmes, but it's used for radio, too.
For radio it used to be that only the "default/original"
version was offered, but due to recent audio factory
changes, many (mostly spoken content or other
for which more relaxed rights apply) radio shows
have got a "podcast" version, too...
