the details I was given may simply be 'examples' to illustrate more general behaviour. So there may be alternatives that provide other frame rates, etc.
Of course. I was thinking about the forum post about the Olympics and HVF by dinky which tellyaddict linked to in a thread here with the title Olympics Might be hvf Only.
"Use --tvmode=hvf if you're able to take the 2GB/hr hit of 1280x720 50fps 5Mbps HD downloads. For the next step down, use --tvmode=hvfsd,hvfbetter to limit the maximum quality to 960x540 50fps 3Mbps. The next step down after that would be --tvmode=hvfbetter to limit the maximum quality to 960x540 25fps 1.7Mbps. If you plan on recording many Olympics programmes, you will want to set --tvmode in your preferences."
I was thinking that your examples were the same as the HVF modes, but now I have checked I see they are not the same. For example HVFvhigh is 960x540 25fps, whereas your 960x540 example is 50fps.
