Bonjour Chris (assuming you read this in the morning)

If you want to see what modes are available for a particular programme then the best thing to do is the following:
get_iplayer <number>  --info
for example get_iplayer 832 --info

In this case my enquiry resulted in:

==================================

The part to examine is modes and modesizes. Ignore the line with audiodescribed, that has a running commentary for sight-impaired viewers. The next line (usually "original" but it could be "editorial" or another title depending on the programme) is the one you want. You will see the various modes with a number after them, that's the CDN (content delivery network ). So for dvfhd there are two CDNs and get_iplayer will access one of them. The same for the other modes.

When you look at the modesizes lines they show the expected length of each file. Usually for 1280x720 at 25fps you expect a file size of around 1GB for a one hour programme.

I find the various mode renames and default modes in the recent versions of get_iplayer confusing due to the various changes from one version to another.

If you refer to the documentation for v2.99, the section https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/modes shows the various modes and the relevant sizes. The other section to refer to, which is more helpful is at https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/modesref - scroll down to "Recording Mode Details" and you will see a table of the various TV modes and the video sizes.

For 1280x720 at 25fps the modes are hvfhd and hlshd and if you examine the --info enquiry above you will see that they are not listed, meaning that 1280x720 at 25fps is not available. I would mention that sometimes all modes are not immediately available after transmission of the programme and at times it can take a day or two for the relevant mode to appear.

We know that 1280x720 is the default, so if you just use:
get_iplayer --get <number>
this will try the default and if not available the next available mode down in the list as shown in the --info enquiry. (I'm presuming you don't want the 50fps mode)

I rarely specify the mode and just let get_iplayer get the best available unless I'm downloading a series and want all the programmes to have the same mode.

Get_iplayer  --subtitles  --get 3265  --tvmode=best  --type=tv --force

I presume this also had the --fps50 in the command line! :-)

works fine==>1280x720   50fps(2344mb)
but
Get_iplayer  --subtitles  --get 3265  --tvmode=hlshd  --type=tv --force

other modes work but none gives 1280x720 25 fps
does that mean the file is not available 1n1280x720 25fps??
