typing ffmpeg at a prompt produces exactly the result you describe.
short bit michael1@linuxBonds:~> which ffmpeg
/usr/bin/ffmpeg michael1@linuxBonds:~> ffmpeg ffmpeg version 3.2 Copyright (c) 2000-2016 the FFmpeg developers built with gcc 4.8 (SUSE Linux)
For HLS you need v2.5 or above so v3.2 ought to be alright. However I have a feeling there was a problem with v3.2 and you need to upgrade to v3.2.2. If you search back through this list you should be able to find the details. Which version of ffmpeg are you running with Mint?
